Opportunity for LED Lights: Lighting consumes a significant amount of electricity for a multi-story underground parking garage. Like similar structures, the Hamilton Garage at Thomas Jefferson University had inefficient metal halide fixtures consuming 185 watts each. With a 24/7 run time, totaling 8,760h/year, the existing fixtures used 212,298 kWh per year. The $.105/kWh electricity rate resulted in a lighting cost of $22,290 per year.

LED Lighting Solution: Independence LED provided a 37 watt LED vaportight fixture solution that saves

148 watts per fixture, resulting in a savings of 80%. The LED light also creates a brighter and safer environment for motorists and hospital visitors. The external driver and aircraft grade deep fin aluminum heat sinks on the linear modules in the vaportight fixtures provide the robust thermal management to ensure color consistency and longevity at the demanding 24/7 run time.

Parking Garage LED Case Study Results: By reducing the fixture wattage from 185 to 37, the total annual savings is 169,839 kWh and $17,833 per year. Over the 60,000 hour 7 year life of the LEDs at 24h/day the lifetime energy savings is $133,397. With historical 3% annual increases in energy cost and reduced bulb replacement and maintenance labor, the savings is over $151,590. The project also earned a

$9,750 rebate from the local energy provider.
