Veterans Affairs Press Release – We can better serve the Men and Women of our Armed Forces.

See the Veterans Affairs Press Release about the energy and cost savings potential across all of the VA Hospitals with energy saving LED Lighting. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs press has been more negative than positive in recent news. Money saved by cutting wasted energy can help fund the additional doctors and nurses to reduce the wait time to care for our Veterans.

Independence LED Lighting launches “Honor Our Vets LED Program” supporting VA Hospitals and Independence Fund on Memorial Day

New program from U.S. LED Manufacturer will dramatically reduce operating costs for VA hospitals, give good jobs to veterans and support the Independence Fund

WAYNE, PA, May 26 (Memorial Day), 2014 — Independence LED Lighting, the award-winning U.S. manufacturer of superior LED tubes and LED fixtures, announced today the “Honor Our Vets LED Program” to support our veterans. The program includes substantial discounts on U.S. made LED lighting, saving 50% on electricity for VA hospitals around the country. The program will support the hiring of veterans to conduct energy audits and install Independence LED tubes. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Independence Fund, a not-for-profit that gives veterans in need the support they deserve, including track wheelchairs and job-training programs.

Independence LED tubes have already been installed at the Durham VA Medical Center in North Carolina, saving taxpayers over $150,000 (See VA Hospital Case Study). With more than 1,700 facilities in the VA health system, ten-year savings could exceed $1 Billion. Independence LED is now able to offer zero-cost out-of-pocket financing for the Federal Government so that they can easily switch the lights to more modern, energy-saving LED technology without any burden to taxpayers or running over budget. The “Honor Our Vets LED Program” accelerates and increases the benefits to our veterans in remembrance of Memorial Day, at a time where the Veteran Administration could use support from American citizens and businesses.

“’Honor Our Vets LED Program’ is designed to support our veterans and the VA system,” said Charlie Szoradi, CEO of Independence LED Lighting. “We can dramatically reduce VA hospital operating costs each month, freeing up dollars to help the VA shorten waiting time for heroes that desperately need care. By hiring veterans to audit and install our cost-saving lighting systems, we will directly support our heroes with good jobs. Plus, donations to the Independence Fund for track wheel chairs, and job training programs for U.S. Veterans will help our heroes beyond the walls of the VA hospitals.”

“Honor Our Vets LED Program” Highlights:

10% Discount on Independence LED’s award-winning 10 year warranty lighting

10% Donation to Independence Fund on the monthly savings

10% Discount on Job Training for LED Manufacturer’s Representatives via webinars and live “LED Boot Camps” at Independence LED’s headquarters.

The more that the VA engages, the more that that they save tax payer dollars and generate added resources to reduce waiting time for Veterans. The Honor Our Vets LED Program runs for a year, through Memorial Day 2015, and Independence LED expects to renew it rolling forward.

100% Commitment to Veterans and Veteran Owned Businesses:

Independence LED has multiple Veteran Owned (VOB) and Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Businesses (SDVOSB) in its distributor and sales network. With about 5 million VOBs and 500,000 SDVOSB’s in the United States, Independence LED will contract U.S. Veterans to provide energy audits and installations whenever possible, within the fair market pricing practices prescribed by the VA.

Reducing the Friction to Retrofit:

Independence LED products are listed on the General Services Administration (GSA) Schedule (GSAadvantage.gov), listed under “Independence LED”, which enables VA facility managers to easily purchase LED’s each month as old fluorescent bulbs burn out.  This “Rolling Retrofit” approach helps to reduce the bureaucracy of whole facility retrofits all at once.

Savings impact on just one pilot retrofit: The phase 1 LED lighting retrofit in Durham saves over $17,000 per year in electricity costs. This phase 1 was for the support “Mission Critical” 24/7 area of the hospital and represents the most-cost effective starting point. Over the 60,000 hour life of the LEDs at 24/7 the seven year savings is over $150,000 (See VA Hospital Case Study). Given that the long run time areas are just a fraction of the whole facility, expanded retrofits have even greater savings.

Savings impact across the VA system:

According to va.gov and the Department of Veterans Affairs, the VA operates the nation’s largest integrated health care system, with more than 1,700 facilities:

  • 153 medical centers, with at least one in each state
  • 909 ambulatory care and community-based outpatient clinics
  • 135 nursing homes
  • 47 residential rehabilitation treatment programs
  • 232 Veterans Centers

The VA owns a total of 145.6 million gross sq. ft., of which 6.6 million are vacant and 4 million are reported as underutilized. With a net of 130 million sq. ft. the energy saving on lighting is massive. Using a multiplier of $2 per square feet to retrofit with LEDs the VA would have $260 million in energy saving lighting, and Independence LED, through its strategic financing partners, can cover over $20 million each month. At no cost to the VA, the private sector can start to help. At a 30% ROI, the annual savings would yield over $75 million in added funds that the VA could dedicate to reducing the wait time to care for the men and women of our armed services. LED’s also reduce maintenance labor and air conditional load over their long life. Over the next decade, the VA could save over $1 BILLION in operating costs. Now is the time to change the lights!
